South Georgia

Hit the ‘Tracker’  button In the right margin and you will see Pelagic Australis’s progress across the South Atlantic, post refit Cape Town on to her first charter in Stanley.  Skip and crew will be joined by an eclectic eight South Georgia Association members, most of whom worked as scientists and field researchers on the island back in the 60’s and 70’s.  We will also deploy Skip, Caradoc Jones and Julian Attwood for two weeks high level ‘work’ in the Allardyce Range.   Our logbook will be updated during the expedition and posted on a subsequent newsletter.

Climbing South Georgia

Falkland Islander and engineer Chris Harris, with understudy Chris Schutz from Switzerland did a superb job of putting the vessel back in top condition during two and half months in Cape Town, and rightly so as we will be busy this season.  We have managed to fill all but the April 1st Tierra del Fuego trip and places on the end of season RYA Delivery.  Stewart Richardson and Jessica Hay will be starting their fourth season running Pelagic Australis, while Miles Wise and Laura Parish will be re-commissioning the original Pelagic in Stanley sometime in November for a string of charters forward.

MAY 2010 RYA DELIVERY TRIP CHANGE OF PLAN

Note a change of plan for the end of season RYA Delivery.  Instead of destination Cape Town, we will be again running the RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased Course from the vessel in Ushuaia, but then extending the training cruise in Tierra del Fuego and also the Falkland Islands before the boat sails offshore to Buenos Aires for her refit.  A week shorter at 35 days, the advantage for students is you can arrange your international air ticket to arrive and return via BA which will be much more cost effective.

SPONSORS

We would like to thank our perennial sponsors Raymarine electronics, Harken deck gear and furlers, Quantum Sails and Sail Racing foul weather gear for their usual first class support.  In fact,  our European clients and friends can win a trip to Tierra del Fuego for the April 22nd 2010 cruise if you buy one of Sail Racing’s down, winter parkas – go  http://www.sailracing.com/#/news/  and have a punt.

TRIPS ON OFFER 2009/2010 SEASON

April 1st to 14th  Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn                         wide open

May 13th to June 10th RYA Delivery from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires   5 places available

The original Pelagic is still available for a last minute South Georgia trip in November/December 2009  or a shorter two week Tierra del Fuego cruise.  From end of December she is booked until end of March, so April 2010 is also a cost effective possibility for TDF.

The 2010/2011 season is wide open and negotiations are just beginning with several groups.  We seem to be still buoyant (pun intended) in these tough economic times, and the one thing that has changed is that people are booking later rather than earlier – but as Burton J Hendrick said in his book The Life of Andrew Carnegie:

“No businessman is worth his salt . . .who does not have his affairs so expertly organized that he cannot drop them at a moments notice and leave for parts unknown.”

 Cheers, Skip
